China has promised to accelerate a zero-tariff policy for Nigerian goods, giving a major boost to the country’s export potential.
The announcement was made by China’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, signaling a strengthened economic partnership between the two nations.
Strengthening Nigeria-China Economic Ties
The pledge came during a meeting between Ambassador Yu and Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.
They discussed trade growth, strategic cooperation, and long-term development priorities. Yu said the early implementation of zero-tariff access would build trust and deliver real economic benefits for both countries.
“China-Nigeria relations are now on the fast track,” Yu said, referencing guidance from China’s upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan. He added that China remains committed to high-standard development policies that support shared global prosperity.
Nigeria’s Strategic Partnership with China
Minister Tuggar welcomed the announcement, calling China one of Nigeria’s most important strategic partners. He highlighted Beijing’s long-standing support for Nigeria’s social and economic growth and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the One China principle.
Tuggar also said Nigeria aims to align its development strategies with China, expand cooperation in manufacturing, trade, and investment, and strengthen the bilateral relationship in the coming years.
Africa’s Largest Economy Poised to Benefit
Earlier this year, China extended zero-tariff treatment to all tariff lines for 33 African countries, reflecting a broader push to deepen economic ties with the continent.
By fast-tracking similar access for Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy stands to gain more directly from China’s trade incentives.
This move comes as both nations celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations and prepare for the 2026 China-Africa Year of Cultural Exchanges.
