A drone strike on the town of Kalogi in Sudan’s South Kordofan has killed at least 50 people, including 33 children, according to medical workers and the Sudanese army. The attack hit a kindergarten on Thursday, making it one of the deadliest incidents involving children since the war began.
Children and Rescuers Caught in Second Strike
Sudan Doctors’ Network and the army said the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) carried out the strike. The army-aligned foreign ministry reported that the kindergarten was hit twice by missiles launched from drones. Civilians and medics who ran to help were also targeted in the follow-up strike, the ministry said.
The RSF has not commented on the allegations.
UNICEF condemned the attack, calling it an “unthinkable violation of children’s rights.” Spokesman Sheldon Yett urged all sides to stop targeting civilian areas and allow humanitarian aid to reach people in need.
RSF Accuses Army of Drone Attack in Darfur
In a separate statement, the RSF accused the army of launching a drone attack on Friday on a market and a fuel depot at the Adre border crossing with Chad in the Darfur region.
Researchers from the Sudan War Monitor said the strike caused civilian casualties and significant damage to the market. The military has not responded to those claims.
The RSF said the army targeted the crossing because it is used to bring in aid and commercial goods.
War in Sudan Intensifies Across Kordofan
Sudan has been engulfed in conflict since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the army and the RSF after a power struggle between former allies.
The Kordofan region, which sits between Khartoum and Darfur and is home to nearly eight million people, has become a key battleground as the army tries to advance towards Darfur.
Independent verification of the latest reports remains difficult due to restricted access to the region.
