There is no doubt that Kenya built one of the world’s great conservation comebacks. Now a mass elephant die-off near Amboseli is testing whether that success story can survive its own farmland.

Kenyan authorities say cyanide is the prime suspect, allegedly traced to tomatoes the elephants ate near Amboseli National Park. But on the ground, the story appears different.
Farmers say they’ve never touched the chemical. Livestock grazing the same fields walked away untouched. And weeks into the investigation, nobody can say how the poison got there, or why its killing only elephants.
The numbers behind Kenya’s conservation comeback
Amboseli sits inside a country that clawed its elephant population back from the brink, Kenya is now home to more than 36,000 elephants, up from historic poaching-era lows, largely thanks to aggressive anti-poaching efforts.
That progress is exactly what makes this case alarming. If cyanide is confirmed, it would mark a new and unpredictable threat to a species Kenya has spent decades trying to save, one that doesn’t come from poachers’ guns, but potentially from the farms next door.
Why the Cyanide theory doesn’t add up, yet
Postmortems found tomatoes in the elephants’ stomachs and preliminary tests detected cyanide, according to Kenya Wildlife Service vet Dr. Isaac Lekolool. The animals reportedly showed paralysis and breathing difficulty before dying. But he later admited the source is still unknown, and full toxicology results are pending.
That gap is where the controversy lives. In Kimana, the farming town bordering Amboseli, cyanide isn’t a substance anyone claims to recognize.
“The chemical they are talking about, we’ve never seen it or heard of it here,” said longtime tomato farmer Elvis Muchai, who’s worked the land for two decades.
Other farmers are raising an even harder question: goats, cattle, and gazelles graze the same contaminated fields. If poison were in the crops, why are elephants the only casualties?
A Bigger threat than one poisoning case
Strip away the chemistry, and this story is really about space, and who gets to keep it.
Kimana is one of Kenya’s most productive farming regions, feeding tomato, onion, and French bean supply chains all the way to Nairobi. As those farms have expanded to the edge of Amboseli, elephants regularly break through electric fencing to raid crops, especially in dry seasons.
The cost isn’t abstract. Government figures show human-wildlife conflict is now the second-leading cause of elephant deaths in Kenya, trailing only poaching, with more than 1,160 elephants killed in conflict-related incidents between 2000 and 2020.
Farmers like Muchai say they’ve absorbed the losses for years with little to no compensation; last season alone cost him roughly $3,800 in destroyed crops.
Kenya Wildlife Service spokesperson Duncan Juma disputes that conflict is behind these particular deaths, insisting the local community “loves these animals.” Investigators haven’t ruled it out either.
What Conservationists Are Demanding Now
The International Fund for Animal Welfare says the case is a warning shot, regardless of what toxicology ultimately proves.
The group is calling for tighter controls on toxic agricultural chemicals near wildlife corridors and long-term coexistence strategies, arguing that protecting elephants and protecting farmers’ livelihoods can no longer be treated as separate problems.
Until lab results confirm a source, the death of 15 elephants remains an open question with no clean answer.
